Suicide Prevention - A call for a new approach to Indigenous suicide prevention

Today is National Sorry Day a day for all to commemorate and acknowledge the hurt and harm of past Australian policies and programs towards Indigenous Australians, in particular the impact of the policies of removal of the Stolen Generations.

Dr Chris Sarra, Chair of the Stronger Smarter Institute, says it’s a timely reminder that Australian governments need to rethink the way it does business with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

“The high rates of suicide and self harm within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is a clear and present result of the unjust impacts of past policies and actions of Australian governments,” said Dr Chris Sarra, Chair of the Stronger Smarter Institute.
